Christopher Price Pontifex – Laus Polyphoniae Review
After lunch, at 2;00pm, we witnessed the highlight of the day: Primo Getto, consisting of soprano Kateřina Bližkovská, tenor Emanuele Petracco, bass violinist Anna Johansen and a marvellous theorbo player instead of the advertised harpsichordist/organist (whose name I did not catch). They performed an absolutely lovely programme of vocal music by Scheidt, Schein, Schütz, Hammerschmidt and Johann Hildebrand. Their unfussy, straightforward performance style showed that truly gifted musicians are able to move their audience profoundly without extraneous gimmicks. Our audience sat as though transfixed, erupting with enthusiastic applause and even a standing ovation at the end. Very wisely, the group ended the concert with a work by Scheidt (unknown to me), “Herzlich thut mich erfreuen”, whose soprano and tenor lines intertwined gracefully in an almost lullaby-like fashion. Truly wonderful music-making.
